HOW we worked WITH CLIENTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES DURING COVID-19.
The folks here at The Finishing Touch Studio loves to travel though we complain it was slowly taking its toll on us after many photography shoots we did overseas. We have been traveling freely for shoots all around the globe, from the snowy mountains of Japan Hokkaido to the deep blue oceans of the Maldives. When Covid-19 hit, we started to miss the fun times we had. However, that does not mean we stopped shooting for overseas’s clients.
In fact, we had more overseas work during this period. This is our experience and how we did it.
1) ZOOM CALLS ALL DAY
We were pretty much on the laptop most of the time talking and emailing throughout the time we had commercial photography projects. We were on zoom calls across international time zones. We were working with clients and agencies from Bangkok to Berlin. For our shoot with Mercedes Germany, we had to take zoom call meetings around 6pm, which was 12 noon in Berlin. Through out our shoots, we had to stay in touch with them throughout the day but they had to wake up around 3am in the morning to ensure they can check through our shots as we move the shoot along. It was challenging however the team made it work.
2) EMAILS
Emails, emails, emails. There is just too many of them in this digital world we lived in. However, it was the only way we could communicate across borders. Like for example we were coordinating with a Thai photographer who shot the plates and model for a Four Seasons Bangkok ad (Below). We were tasked to put the elements of the images through digital imaging and photo editing. We had to go back and forth quite a bit, it might take some patience but try to communicate clearly what you need to ask and list down important items that need to be addressed with a time buffer. It will take sometime before an answer is given.
CONCLUSION
The world is changing and doing commercial photography is not the same as it was before. Many photographers and clients are shooting from the comfort of their home across the world. Learning how more about the client’s country is crucial and knowing their culture helps.
